We exist to unite all generations to go make disciples of Jesus.

Midway Church is a part of the Southern Baptist Convention. As such, we identify with other Christians around the world who are known for their commitment to the Bible. It allows our church to participate in the largest missionary organization in the world. Through the SBC “Cooperative Program,” we help support over 5,000 missionaries in 127 nations around the world.

We believe that in a thriving church, Christianity is not a spectator sport. All of us have key gifts and roles to play in God’s purpose. As a community, we are better when we are together.

OUR PASSION IS GOD & HIS WORD

God breathed the breath of life in us. Through His Word, He continues to speak into our life. God simply wants us to use that breath to worship Him.

IT ALL STARTS WITH FAMILY

The family is God’s building block for society. He established it and defined it. The church exists to support and enhance family units. We prioritize the health and well-being of the family.

EVERY HUMAN MATTERS

God desires that everyone be reached by the life-transforming power of the Gospel. We desire to see every human being introduced to who Jesus is and what He has done regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, background, or any other defining characteristic.

WE CHOOSE TO MEET PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE

We desire to communicate the Gospel with cultural relevance, grace, and power, so that the truth of the Gospel can be understood and received by every human being in the world.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY MAKES US STRONGER

Diversity provides a multitude of perspectives, experiences, and convictions that better represent the depth of Christ’s character to our community abroad. The Bible describes heaven as a place where people from every tribe, nation, and language will worship one God, Jesus Christ, together. If that’s going to happen someday, why not today?

WE LEAD BY SERVING

Christ came not to be served but to serve. He embraced those the world ignored and loved those in which the world found no value. Jesus led the way into the love of God by His actions. We take Jesus at His words: He that would be the first of all must be the servant of all.

WE MULTIPLY, NOT MAINTAIN

Jesus has called us to a mission. The mission must be accomplished. This brings perspective and urgency to our lives. We are called to grow the movement of Jesus in the world. We choose to multiply people, resources, and leaders towards the advancement of the Kingdom of Heaven.

WE LIVE BIG THROUGH GENEROSITY

God is a generous God, and expects generosity from His people. He is looking for people who are faithfully and continuously generous with their finances, time, and spiritual gifts. We believe God can use our finite gifts to make an eternal impact in the world.

WE FIGHT FOR UNITY

We ferociously pursue being a people of one mind, one heart, and one purpose. We take Jesus seriously when He says in John 17 that the world will know that He is God when we are unified. We desire to be known, not as individuals, but as the body of Christ at Midway Church.

WE STRIVE FOR INTEGRITY

God desires people of integrity who live Holy lives that are accountable to Him and the Church. Integrity glorifies God, protects us from stumbling, and encourages growth in all aspects of life.

SALVATION AND UNITY ESSENTIALS

We have made it our mission as a church and a team to be unified in the essentials, to give liberty and grace in the non-essentials, and to love God’s way in everything. We strive to be a place of truth and a place of love. We believe we glorify God in living this way.

SALVATION ESSENTIALS

These are truths from scripture one has to believe in order to be saved and agree with to be a member of our church. These are the “NON-NEGOTIABLE’S.” (Ephesians 4:4-6)

GOD

There is one and only one living and true God. He is an intelligent, spiritual, and personal Being, the Creator, Redeemer, Preserver, and Ruler of the universe. God is infinite in holiness and all other perfections. God is all-powerful and all knowing; and His perfect knowledge extends to all things, past, present, and future, including the future decisions of His free creatures. To Him we owe the highest love, reverence, and obedience. The eternal triune God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence, or being.

GOD THE FATHER

God as Father reigns with providential care over His universe, His creatures, and the flow of the stream of human history according to the purposes of His grace. He is all-powerful, all knowing, all loving, and all wise. God is Father in truth to those who become children of God through faith in Jesus Christ. He is fatherly in His attitude toward all men.

GOD THE SON

Christ is the eternal Son of God. In His incarnation as Jesus Christ He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. Jesus perfectly revealed and did the will of God, taking upon Himself human nature with its demands and necessities and identifying Himself completely with mankind yet without sin. He honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and in His substitutionary death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of men from sin. He was raised from the dead with a glorified body and appeared to His disciples as the person who was with them before His crucifixion. He ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where He is the One Mediator, fully God, fully man, in whose Person is effected the reconciliation between God and man. He will return in power and glory to judge the world and to consummate His redemptive mission. He now dwells in all believers as the living and ever-present Lord.

GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, fully divine. He inspired holy men of old to write the Scriptures. Through illumination He enables men to understand truth. He exalts Christ. He convicts men of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. He calls men to the Savior, and effects regeneration. At the moment of regeneration He baptizes every believer into the Body of Christ. He cultivates Christian character, comforts believers, and bestows the spiritual gifts by which they serve God through His church. He seals the believer unto the day of final redemption. His presence in the Christian is the guarantee that God will bring the believer into the fullness of the stature of Christ. He enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service.

THE BIBLE

The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God’s revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy. It reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation.

THE CHURCH

A New Testament church of the Lord Jesus Christ is an autonomous local congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel; observing the two ordinances of Christ, governed by His laws, exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His Word, and seeking to extend the gospel to the ends of the earth. Each congregation operates under the Lordship of Christ through democratic processes. In such a congregation each member is responsible and accountable to Christ as Lord. Its scriptural officers are pastors and deacons. While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture. The New Testament speaks also of the church as the Body of Christ, which includes all of the redeemed of all the ages, believers from every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation.

SALVATION

Salvation involves the redemption of the whole man, and is offered freely to all who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, who by His own blood obtained eternal redemption for the believer. In its broadest sense salvation includes regeneration, justification, sanctification, and glorification. There is no salvation apart from personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord.

Regeneration, or the new birth, is a work of God’s grace whereby believers become new creatures in Christ Jesus. It is a change of heart wrought by the Holy Spirit through conviction of sin, to which the sinner responds in repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Repentance and faith are inseparable experiences of grace. Repentance is a genuine turning from sin toward God. Faith is the acceptance of Jesus Christ and commitment of the entire personality to Him as Lord and Savior.
Justification is God’s gracious and full acquittal upon principles of His righteousness of all sinners who repent and believe in Christ. Justification brings the believer unto a relationship of peace and favor with God.
Sanctification is the experience, beginning in regeneration, by which the believer is set apart to God’s purposes, and is enabled to progress toward moral and spiritual maturity through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in him. Growth in grace should continue throughout the regenerate person’s life.
Glorification is the culmination of salvation and is the final blessed and abiding state of the redeemed.

UNITY ESSENTIALS

These are beliefs that we may have differing views on and still be saved, but we commit to the Midway stance in order to remain undivided. These are the “NEGOTIABLE’S.” (1 Corinthians 1:10)

SPIRITUAL GIFTS

Few areas of theology within the church have caused more division than the subject of spiritual gifts. Some in our church believe all of the spiritual gifts spoken of in 1 Corinthians 12-14 are for today. Others believe some of the gifts are for today. And, there are those who believe none of the gifts are for today. You can see the potential problems. Entire denominations are formed simply on these differences.

The Non-Negotiable:

We do not believe that this subject constitutes a salvation issue, nor is it essential for making disciples.
Remember, for those who believe that the gifts are present today; the Spirit of God does not work contrary to the Word of God.

Behavior that Unifies:

At Midway, it is okay to believe differently on this issue, and we will show respect and grace to those who do, but we will act in this way for the sake of unity:

Because this is a non-salvation area of contention between believers, we will not have a place in our church where the gift of tongues (languages) is encouraged or taught.
We will not allow the discussion of a non-salvation issue to destroy the Lord’s work.
We do believe God does miracles, answers our prayers, and through the work of the Holy Spirit, empowers us to serve Him and do good works for making disciples.

ETERNAL SECURITY

Election is the gracious purpose of God, according to which He regenerates, justifies, sanctifies, and glorifies sinners. It is consistent with the free agency of man, and comprehends all the means in connection with the end. It is the glorious display of God’s sovereign goodness, and is infinitely wise, holy, and unchangeable. It excludes boasting and promotes humility. All true believers endure to the end. Those whom God has accepted in Christ, and sanctified by His Spirit, will never fall away from the state of grace, but shall persevere to the end. Believers may fall into sin through neglect and temptation, whereby they grieve the Spirit, impair their graces and comforts, and bring reproach on the cause of Christ and temporal judgments on themselves; yet they shall be kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.

This is a non-salvation issue. One can be wrong about this issue and still be a Christian.

There are many differing perspectives that exist. These include perspectives such as the Arminian and Calvinist, along with many variations in between. These issues have been debated for centuries among God-fearing, Jesus-loving people. Some of the distinctive opposing viewpoints include the following:

Some believe that salvation can be lost while others believe salvation cannot be lost as it was given by God.
Some believe God chooses some to be saved and some to be lost while others believe that God opens the door for all to be saved and makes it man’s choice.
However, most schools of thought find common ground in the concept that a true Christian will produce good works and be known by their fruit.

At Midway, we believe that salvation is eternally secure because of Jesus Christ and the seal of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14). Once true salvation through Jesus is received, nothing can take it away (John 10:27-29). We encourage everyone to grow in Christ as we are not the judge of your salvation. These perspectives can co-exist when the focus becomes the mission that Christ gave to His Church.

BAPTISM AND THE LORD’S SUPPER

Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an act of obedience symbolizing the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, the believer’s death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus. It is a testimony to his faith in the final resurrection of the dead. Being a church ordinance, it is prerequisite to the privileges of church membership and to the Lord’s Supper. The Lord’s Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming.

“For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. For whenever you eat this break and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.’” 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (NIV)

We believe that no one should take communion unless they understand the concepts of sin and salvation, and have accepted Christ. For those not fitting this category, we do believe communion is a teaching opportunity to explain the concepts of sin and salvation, and our need for Jesus.

THE PRIESTHOOD OF EVERY BELIEVER

The Bible teaches that every Christian is called to “full-time” Christian service, regardless of his or her vocation. We practice the truth that every believer is a minister by encouraging every member to find a place of service and ministry.

Every believer has direct access to God through Bible reading/study, prayer, and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Every Christian is to be a disciple, developing relational environments in which they share their faith with those around them by word and by action.

END TIMES

God, in His own time and in His own way, will bring the world to its appropriate end. According to His promise, Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly in glory to the earth; the dead will be raised; and Christ will judge all men in righteousness. The unrighteous will be consigned to Hell, the place of everlasting punishment. The righteous in their resurrected and glorified bodies will receive their reward and will dwell forever in Heaven with the Lord.

We have people with many views on this issue in our church. Some are pre-millennial, others are amillennial or post-millennial, and there are various other differing views. This is not a salvation issue.

We believe there will be a literal return of Christ and a Judgment Day. We also believe there will be a literal rapture (a catching up of the saints). How and when this will happen has been a source of great debate. We believe the details are in God’s hands and this is not a salvation issue.

MAN

Man is the special creation of God, made in His own image. He created them male and female as the crowning work of His creation. The gift of gender is thus part of the goodness of God’s creation. In the beginning man was innocent of sin and was endowed by his Creator with freedom of choice. By his free choice man sinned against God and brought sin into the human race. Through the temptation of Satan man transgressed the command of God, and fell from his original innocence whereby his posterity inherit a nature and an environment inclined toward sin. Therefore, as soon as they are capable of moral action, they become transgressors and are under condemnation. Only the grace of God can bring man into His holy fellowship and enable man to fulfill the creative purpose of God. The sacredness of human personality is evident in that God created man in His own image, and in that Christ died for man; therefore, every person of every race possesses full dignity and is worthy of respect and Christian love.

ETERNITY

People will either exist eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is eternal death in Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life in Heaven. Heaven and Hell are real and literal places of eternal existence.

STEWARDSHIP

God is the source of all blessings, temporal and spiritual; all that we have and are we owe to Him. Christians have a spiritual debtorship to the whole world, a holy trusteeship in the gospel, and a binding stewardship in their possessions. They are therefore under obligation to serve Him with their time, talents, and material possessions; and should recognize all these as entrusted to them to use for the glory of God and for helping others. According to the Scriptures, Christians should contribute of their means cheerfully, regularly, systematically, proportionately, and liberally for the advancement of the Redeemer’s cause on earth.

At Midway, we practice tithing for the support of Christ’s Body, the church, as God’s Word commands. We recognize that giving 10% of our gross income is the biblical standard of giving to the local church. A tithe of everything a person produces belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord.

“A tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain or fruit, belongs to the Lord and must be set apart to him as holy.” Leviticus 27:30 (NLT)

“Ever since the time of your forefathers you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD Almighty. But you ask, How are we to return? Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, How do we rob you? In tithes and offerings. Everything over 10% is an “offering of gratitude” for the great things God does for us everyday. The offering is a privilege to give and is an addition to the tithe. We believe that the local church wherever you attend is the storehouse and you should give your tithe there. The offering may be given at your discretion to any worthwhile ministry, church, or organization. We also recognize that we must be good stewards of our time and talents – everything we have – as the Lord has blessed us with these things as well. Like any other form of obedience, tithing is a matter of the heart.

OUR STORY

THE START
1847

Originally called “The Baptist Church of Christ at Macedonia,” Midway Church was founded on July 15, 1847. Records indicate that a relationship with the Southern Baptist Convention was present as early as 1850, this relationship continues to this day.

THE EARLY YEARS
1853-1900

Midway has always been a church committed to the mission of making disciples. In 1854, a special committee was elected to help raise money for missionaries and specific mission work. This is one tradition that we continue to this day.

THE EXPANSION YEARS
1995-PRESENT

On June 2, 1996, Todd Wright was called to serve as Lead Pastor of Midway Macedonia Baptist Church. Over the next 25 years, Pastor Todd would help guide Midway through a massive philosophy of ministry shift. The way we do things may have changed, but our heart for the Gospel and for people has not!
